What Is It?
The Newcastle Metro Radio Arena is a popular entertainment venue, holding music and sports events played by big names and seating 11,000 people at its full capacity. Concerts, gigs and sports matches for basketball and ice hockey are all staged in the region’s largest arena.
The arena has undergone many different name changes since its opening in the mid-1990s, depending on the sponsorship deal, and is now sponsored by local station Metro Radio. It was opened to create a new, larger space for entertainment events in the city in order to attract bigger acts and more well-known performers, as the nearest venues on this scale were Glasgow and Sheffield.
Some of the famous names who have played Newcastle’s arena include Elton John, Katy Perry, Tom Jones, Whitney Housten, Justin Bieber and Kylie Minogue, to name only a few.
The Metro Radio Arena also holds other major events, such as Christmas fairs, comic and film conventions and even Cirque du Soleil. Find out when your favourite singer or band is playing next here.
