Jesmond Hotel

You may have heard this word being thrown around a lot recently, and with the likes of Pinterest, ideas for up-cycling items are popping up all over the shop. Here at the Rosebery Hotel, a boutique bed and breakfast in Newcastle, we LOVE taking unwanted & unloved items and turning them into something beautiful, stylish and loved. Of course, the best part is sharing them with you in the guest bedrooms and interiors for the common parts of our stylish small hotel.

All around our boutique hotel, you’ll find quirky vintage items, a lot of which have been refurbished and up-cycled. Our Facebook page keeps you up to date with the latest goings on, and any recent purchases to be up-cycled, like vintage cinema chairs for the hotel bedrooms. We’ve turned scabby old seats into superb thrones, fit for any vintage king or queen! But seriously, it’s amazing what you can do with antique and vintage furniture; here are a few of our fabulous before and after pictures:

Vintage cinema chairs are such an interesting form of seating to include in any guest B&B bedroom. A row of 3 seats gives such scope for imagination, especially if the arms are padded, as well as the seat and back, you can go wild with different fabrics for each section! As you can see, we’ve used some of the spare fabric to make matching cushions, which not only adds extra comfort to the hotel room seats but looks brilliant (if we do say so ourselves). The Rosebery Hotel in Jesmond is a quirky and unique place to stay in Newcastle upon tyne.

Finding the right fabric can make any reupholstering job sing. We love this map fabric, on this wing back chair and the contrasting scarlet studding, adds a colour pop set against the teal legs.  Again, because you get to choose your own fabric, you could go all out and have the arms, seat and back all in clashing patterns and colours! If you wanted. The individuality and elegance of refurbished items in our Newcastle hotel accommodation ensure that guests have visual interest and a pleasing and memorable stay.
With the variety of shapes and sizes of chairs and soft furnishings, that are available from vintage fairs and antique emporiums, you can deck out your own living room, full of bespoke seating to suit your own taste! And even make your own bedroom, a boutique hotel bedroom. How does that grab you?
fireplaces
An old fireplace can look so gloomy when it’s been neglected and started to rust. Many are left feeling sorry for themselves in salvage yards across the land. So why not hand paint or shot blast and powder coat them, for an instant interior facelift! A fireplace can be the main feature in a bedroom, or even a bathroom, so let’s make the most of them! Imagine a real fire in your bathroom in the Winter months, a large glass of red wine, whilst bathing. How fabulous does that sound? Many of the rooms in the Rosebery Hotel, in Jesmond, feature beautifully restored fireplaces and roll top baths.

If larger furnishings aren’t what you’re after, try taking smaller vintage accessories and re-purposing them! We love vintage tea sets, but it’s not really practical to have a cupboard full of them, and they end up going unused, so making a fun lamp base or a bird feeder means you can show them off! We’ve brightened up our Jesmond hotel reception with a soft pink, floral crockery lamp base and a stunning, dusky pink, vintage shade.  To keep all the sweet little birds happy in the south facing garden of our boutique B&B in Newcastle, we’ve made a unique bird feeder, utilising brightly coloured glassware too!
Something you will have seen a lot of recently is teacup candles, they’re sold everywhere, but why spend the money when they are so simple to make yourself? And creating your own means that you get the choice of which cups you use!At the Rosebery Hotel, everything in our boutique, design led interior is bespoke, unique and carefully thought about. You won’t find it anywhere else. We’ve used so many different techniques to achieve our quirky bed and breakfast interior design look. From something as simple as shot blasting and powder coating vintage garden sets (a process usually used for commercial application, but the finish is immaculate, so why not bring it into a residential environment).Jesmond HotelTo something more detailed and elaborate, like reupholstering a French, vintage, button back bed. Which makes such a fabulous statement in any bedroom, and can change the look of a room instantly! The Rosebery Hotel’s guest bedrooms are full of delightful examples of comfy, beautiful beds. We put the ‘bed’ back in ‘bedroom’ with these stylish lovelies, and our guests always have a good night’s sleep here in our Newcastle based hotel! We are one of the only budget hotels in Newcastle to offer such a unique environment, with so many features to enjoy.Jesmond Hotel
Up-cycling is a great way to keep a piece of furniture alive, and the opportunities are endless! It’s a great feeling when your upcycled creations get complimented, and you get to explain everything you’ve done, and also how simple it was (and sometimes even inspire people to give it a go themselves). Making an old, antique item into a stunning, usable piece is really rewarding. You step back once it’s finished and think “That looks excellent!” and your next thought is “What can I do next?!”We definitely recommend that you give it a go! And if you want, you can share your projects with us on our boutique hotel’s Facebook page, or tag us in your tweets! We’d love to see!
Happy up-cycling!
